Twitter brush-off Nigeria, set to open its African headquarters in Ghana

Following Nigerian government’s suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria, Nigerians have embraced the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to continue using the micro-blogging platform.

On Friday, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

Shortly after the federal government announced that Twitter has been suspended, virtual private network (VPN) started to dominate discussions on social media platforms.

From the basic explanation of what VPN is, using it will help hide your internet protocol (IP) address — the unique number that identifies you and your location in the world.

One of the benefits of using VPN is that it changes your IP address. This implies that with a new IP address — which can be that of any country of your choice — you can use Twitter as if you’re in your selected country without restriction.

To do this, all that is needed is to change the location of the VPN to any country of your choice and connect to that country’s VPN.

Well, if you do not have a free VPN as not all VPN are free to use and also leaving the VPN app running in your phone may quickly drain your your phone battery, here is another way to access Twitter in Nigeria.

5 Steps to set up your Twitter App

  1. Open your Twitter App
  2. Click on the Options button and go to Settings and Privacy
  3. Tick Enable HTTP Proxy
  4. Enter  the Proxy Host: 159.65.26.225
  5. Enter the Port: 8080

That is all, close your Twitter App and open it again to gain access from Nigeria without a VPN.
