The Imo State Police Command on Monday revealed that the attack by gunmen on its divisional base camp at Umuelemai in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state led to the death of an officer.
The command threatened to take action against hoodlums burning police facilities in the state.
The spokesman of the command, Orlando Ikeokwu, in a statement, said, “on the 20/03/21, at about 18.30 hours, hoodlums whose number could not be ascertained, attacked the Divisional Police Hqrs, Isiala Mbano, shooting sporadically.”
Ikeokwu disclosed that the operatives of the division successfully repelled them during the attack on Saturday.
He added that after the attack, it was discovered that the hoodlums destroyed some doors and windows.
The spokesperson, however, stated that no arm was taken away.
Ikeokwu lamented that one Inspector, who was on duty at the time of the attack, was fatally wounded and died hours later while receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Nasiru Mohammed, has visited the station to evaluate the extent of damages done.
Mohammed while speaking on the attack on the station described the incident as “barbaric”.
He further encouraged officers to brace up with the challenge and ensure policing activities continues in the area.
In another development, some unknown gunmen on Sunday night, March 21 reportedly stormed Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River State and abducted Comrade Ben Ukpekpi.
Reports reaching Naija News confirmed that the state chapter Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was abducted by the assailants in the presence of his wife, while they were both standing outside their apartment at Cross River Estates (CROSPIL).
